Red Wall
An icy, worn Red Wall looms menacing in this personal account of the artist’s own suffering in China. Zhang’s struggle as a prisoner of conscience is suggested by the torture to which two figures are subjected, and the impervious, inward gaze of the meditator at center. Cracks in the wall hint that the massive structure, or the state apparatus it represents, are condemned to a ruin that has already begun.
